Formatting an SD card on a Mac is usually done using the "Disk Utility" application. This process erases all data on the card, so ensure you've backed up any important files beforehand.
Here's how to do it:
Open Disk Utility: You can find Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities
folder. Alternatively, use Spotlight Search (Command + Space) and type "Disk Utility".
Select the SD Card: In the Disk Utility window, you'll see a list of drives on the left sidebar. Find your SD card. Be very careful to select the correct disk; formatting the wrong drive will result in data loss. It will likely appear as a removable drive.
Erase the SD Card: Click on the "Erase" button located in the top toolbar.
Name the SD Card: In the pop-up window, give your SD card a name in the "Name" field. This is the volume label that will appear on your Mac.
Choose a Format: Select a file system format from the "Format" dropdown menu. The best format depends on how you plan to use the SD card:
MS-DOS (FAT) (also known as FAT32): This is the most universally compatible format and works well with most cameras, older computers, and other devices. However, it has a file size limit of 4GB.
ExFAT: Recommended if you need to store files larger than 4GB and want compatibility with both macOS and Windows.
APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled): Use these formats only if you plan to use the SD card exclusively with macOS. Mac OS Extended
is often preferred for older macOS versions.
Choose a Scheme (Partition Map): This option might appear on some macOS versions. If it does, choose "GUID Partition Map" for best compatibility and modern hardware. For older macOS and compatibility with older systems, "Master Boot Record" can be used.
Erase: Click the "Erase" button to start the formatting process. A progress bar will appear.
Done: Once the formatting is complete, click "Done." The SD card is now formatted and ready for use.
